Why is the Termite a pEst?

What do Termites do?

Termites are serious pests who eat and damage wood inside homes and on property. Termites are soft bodied insects that dehydrate quickly. They are tiny and can fit in a 1.5-millimeter gap.  A colony usually starts after termite swarmers leave their nest—typically after a rainstorm. A male and female reproduce and will become the King and Queen of a new colony. Depending on the type of termite, the new nest will be in wood or in the ground. A Termite Queen can reproduce a new termite every few seconds for years.  The Queen can live for 25 years and lay 9,000,000 eggs.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean Termites live in the ground and can build tunnels down to 30 feet. They will build mud tubes to keep themselves from dehydrating when digging into exposed air and they use these tubes to connect to other pieces of wood. Colonies can invade homes and be up to 100 feet away from the home. There can be up to a million termites in a colony. There may also be multiple satellite colonies from the main colony.

One way to examine if a colony is active is to investigate mud tubes for workers. Colonies may still be active but in a satellite site at the time if not found. You can also notice pieces of mud on walls inside homes where the termites plug in the exit holes. Mud tubes can be seen in crawl spaces or along the outside of homes.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are not as sensitive to moisture as Subterranean Termites. They extract water from wood and leave an excrement called frass. Frass looks like pepper with a six-sided shape. Drywood termites’ nest and feed in dead wood. Wood infested with termites will sound hollow and may break with only the strength one’s fingers. Drywood termites can generally be found in window frames, bathrooms, garages, sheds, and old piles of wood.

TERMITE PEST CONTROL ST GEORGE Services

Salisbury Pest Solutions only uses the top industry chemicals to get rid of termites. The chemicals typically provide up to 5 years of protection. Most termites live in the ground and so we build a barrier for your home to make sure they can’t infect your home any longer. The chemical has a transfer effect, effectively killing the queen and eradicating the colony. We also like to put this same chemical in walls to make sure any straggler termites, lingering in their galleries, also get infected.

Getting rid of termites includes the use of non-repellent insecticides. Termites use a method called Trophallaxis to exchange food from one Termite to the next. These insecticides allow for termites to use Trophallaxis to spread the chemical amongst each other, eventually killing the queen and eliminating the colony. The use of heat can also be used to kill Drywood termites which can be a good option.
