Spiders are the most common arachnid seen in people’s homes. Spiders can be a nuisance since they build webs and can also bite humans causing injury and possibly death. The most common spiders in Utah are Black Widows, Brown Recluse/Desert Recluse, Hobo, Huntsman, Wolf, and Sac Spiders.

All spiders in St George Utah are predators and they must eat bugs and other creatures to live. If you have spiders in your home it is a good indicator that there are other bugs there as well. Treating for bugs at the same time as treating for the spiders is a good way to reduce the amount of spiders in your home.

Why is the Spider a pEst?

Spiders are one of the most feared pests, though much of the fear comes from misunderstandings. The only real problem that most spiders cause is that they leave unsightly webs around the home.  Even though the majority are venomous there are only 2 types of Spiders in St George Utah whose venom will actually harm a human.

The Desert Recluse

The first of the spiders in St George Utah to keep an eye out for is the desert recluse. These spiders are only found in Southern Washington County. They prefer to live in dark places such as wood piles, crawl spaces, garages, attics, vents, under rocks, etc.

The Desert Recluse is light brown spider with six eyes, and a violin shaped mark on it’s top right behind its eyes. It has 4 pairs of long legs and the females can produce up to 250 spiders per year.  Recluse spider venom contains a neurotoxic, so their bites can cause tissue death, slow healing, pain, and in rare cases fatality. These predators hunt at night in search of insects and can find themselves in your home since they are mobile predators and rely on scavenging to survive.

There many spiders with a similar mark, look and coloring, so the best practice is to leave spiders with this kind of appearance alone and let a professional handle them for you.

The Black Widow

The second poisonous spider in Southern Utah is the back widow. Female black widows, which are the ones you want to be careful of, are a shiny, jet-black spider with a small cephalothorax and a much larger abdomen. They have long, thin legs and a red hourglass marking on their bellies. The females can be up to 3 times the size of the male. The bite from a black widow can cause nausea, sweat, cramping, tremors, fever, and more. People have also died from Black Widow bites, but that is uncommon.

Black Widows use webs to capture prey and prefer to be on rock walls, irrigation boxes, hollow stumps, basements, garages, bushes, etc.

Spiders in St George Utah Services

Spiders in St George Utah are little more difficult to kill or remove than insects are because they like to keep their bodies high off the ground. Additionally, they don’t groom themselves, so it is difficult to eliminate these pests with run of the mill pesticide. Even when the adult spiders are affected by products, their eggs sacs may still be unaffected and if they are allowed to hatch a new generation of spiders may be released into your home.

The best way to get rid of these pests is to call an expert. At Salisbury Pest Solutions, we have a variety of chemical and non-chemical management options. These options include web removal, sticky traps, exclusion, increased lighting, decluttering, and the use of pesticides that contain microencapsulation, wettable powders and residual formulation.
